I have a 2004 Ford Focus ZTS 2.3. Possible Transmission problem.

I was driving up my street one day and my car stopped accelerating, starting making a loud whining noise. When I tried to accelerate my car didn't move but rpms went up. I tried other gears but still wouldn't move. The whining noise gets louder in gear. I was able to put it in neutral and roll it down the hill into my driveway. When I opened my hood it smells like something burnt. Any ideas?

I recommend you pull the transmission dip stick and see if the color of the ATF is still a nice red or has it turned orange or brown.
The reddish (pink) color is good. Recommend you check the transmission to see if it has enough fluid. http://www.wikihow.com/Check-and-Add-Fluid-to-Your-Automatic-Transmission
If you have a manual trans your clutch is slipping. This cannot be adjusted out. You need a clutch job
