2002 windstar

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Windstar starts up fine.  After driving 20 minutes on freeway and I
get off onto surface streets and slow down at a light my car dies.  It spits and
sputters and won't restart until I sit there for 20-30 minutes and it cools down.
Then it starts right up again.  This is very dangerous in traffic.  What could
cause this?  I have taken it back to the dealer that I bought it from and their
mechanics cannot find the problem.  But they have not road tested it.  When
it gets hot it shuts off.  When it cools off for 30 minutes it starts.  Help please!

Check your fuel pump relay. It’s a $13 part at most auto stores..... If that doesn’t fix it sit in your van and turn the key to run (don’t try to start it). Listen for the fuel pump to charge the lines. If you don’t hear it whir. I’d replace the pump. Hopefully the relay is just bad, dropping a fuel tank isn’t fun. Just had the exact same issue with my van. It would run for 20 min and die. I replaced both the pump and my relay at the same time. Fixed it in about an 1 1/2 hours.
