2000 mercury cougar 2.5... stalling and losing power..randomly

Asked by justmepc Mar 24, 2012 at 06:45 PM about the Mercury Cougar

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car had 137k miles, it drives for a few days with no issue, then suddenly it bogs, loses power and
stalls. Almost feels like its not getting fuel. It starts right up again, but hills do seem to aggravate it. i am
afraid to drive it. I replaced the fuel filter and gave it a fuel injection treatment. Also, there is this burning
type smell during these episodes, and sometimes during normal driving i can smell it slightly. And the
brakes feel funny. Almost like one side is catching more then the other.

Was this problem ever resolved?? My cougar is doing a similar thing. Starts, will run fine for several hours... days.. Kinda varies. Every once in a while I will loose power and the car will die. Once it dies it will not start for at least 45 minutes. After 45 minutes the car will start ans run as if nothing ever happened.

Please Explain to me What I'm looking at in this picture....I have an 02. 35th anniversary edition Mercury Cougar V6 my car will be running great and then start to sputter randomly the gas pedal starts to feel like it does when the vehicle is off There's no power whatsoever My car acts as though it's running out of gas. I will pull over my car will die And within 30 seconds or less I can start it back And it runs with all of the power back as though nothing ever was wrong I was told by 2 people at 2 seperate auto parts stores That it was because I ran 87 fuel And that my car should only run mid- grade fuel. I was given a treatment to put in the gas and told to only run Mid-grade and I have My car has done good for over a month until the last couple days and now it is right back to the same ordeal. Please help me Figure out what is wrong
