What caused a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis Cruise Control to stop working for a week and then the mechanic at a dealer kept driving and test the cruise control and it continually worked?

I have been using three fingers to press the "on" button and it has worked so far for almost a month.

Which fuse is cruise control. No owners manual, or labels on cover.
