Towing a '95 Subaru Legacy Outback for across country move/how best to do this

Asked by Sheri Feb 16, 2014 at 10:41 AM about the Subaru Legacy

Question type: General

I will be towing my 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback behind a 22 ft. U-Haul from GA to Texas. I plan to rent a front tow type dolly. My son says he is not sure about this as its an AWD. Do we just put it in neutral or does the drive line need to be taken loose?  ANY help is greatly appreciated! I don't want to depend on U Haul associates info!

If the driveshaft is spinning, it will be turning inside the transfer case- why take chances? Just get your son to drive it- like a P51 Mustang escorting a B17 on a mission- stay flexible in your thinking on a big move- other Gurus may want to disagree with this-

Definitely either disconnect the drive shaft, tow the car on a flatbed, or have someone drive it out alongside the U-Haul.

Thanks!! It has to be towed as I only have one other driver and they are driving my loaded van out. We will ether flat bed it or unhook the drive shaft as noted.

I read in the manual that you can insert a 15A fuse in the engine fuse box to activate front wheel drive when you are towing with the front wheels on a dolly. Is this not recommend? I have a Legacy L 1995 sedan, automatic transmission, that I'm hoping to tow from Idaho to D.C. next month. Any thought? thanks! Simon

I drove a 27 ft. Uhaul towing my Subie on a transport. I would Never put her on a dolly... just what I've read and heard. Bad idea.
