Try and find an independent mechanic unless you already have one and see if your car be fitted to the multi layered head gaskets.
By the way, how many miles are on your car? You should change the water pump and other belts at the same time.
The entire job is pretty labor intense, if you can find someone who knows about the multi layered head gaskets, and is going to guarantee their work, I would go with that. Should not cost more than $1,500 or a little less depending upon if you do a water pump, belts etc. I imagine you've done your timing belt at least once already before as it is a 1996. And, are you a member of the Subaru high mileage club?
John, you're welcome, if I've been helpful to you, please mark one of my replies best answer, thanks.
