4 wheels are driven when you need them. Helps on snow, ice and mud. I would not own anything but a 4x4 truck. AWD in a sports car helps in cornering and when driving in the wet.
Are you racing? Are you driving in mud, snow, ice, sleet, rain? AWD is 4 wheels providing traction in this fashion; 2 wheels pulling, 2 wheels pushing. RWD, 2 wheels pushing the car. With today's AWD vehicles, gas mileage, wear and tear is minimal compared to the old days (30 years ago). And, a million arguments can be made on both sides of the equation for racing. Which is right? The one that crosses the finish line. First!
