How to tell a 1984 from a 1985 944

Asked by meranti Dec 29, 2010 at 07:03 PM about the Porsche 944

Question type: General

Hi.  New kid on the block.  NOAP... never owned a porsche.  I am looking for a 944 and saw a very nice one that is listed as a 1985.  I know that mid 85' the dashboard changed.  How can i tell from the pictures what year the car is?  It has the older style wheels, not the "phone dial" type.

Indeed the most obvious difference is the dashboard. To the middle of 85 they look like this: http://www.shoden.org/images/cars/Porsche/Dash.jpg And from then onwards (also referred to sometimes as an 85.5 model) they look like this: http://www.flyron.com/944/08_944dash.jpg Wheels are easily interchanged, so don't take the wheels as an indicator of the year of manufacture.

Pre 1985.5 were built in the VW Rabit plant, not by Porsche in Stutgart, Has a VW rabbit chassis and suspension, not sure about the drive train however. So when I looked for my 944 I aimed for after the 1985.5 marker. Its now for sale (1987) since I bought a 911
