When the A/C system has no refrigerant, there is a switch on the line called the low pressure switch. This locks out the compressor until there is enough refrigerant to run the compressor without damaging it. (Refrigerant circulates the lubricating oil.) Some people "hot wire" the compressor clutch by hooking to the positive terminal of the battery. Again you will have no lubrication for several minutes. The safe way is to hook up your refrigerant can and line to the low side (vacuum side) that runs from evaporator (heater box) to the compressor. With motor OFF at first, turn the can UPSIDE DOWN to get liquid and warm the can gently with a hairdryer. After getting the first 12oz can in, you can start the motor and draw the second can in while holding it RIGHT SIDE UP to draw vapor only. Two 12oz cans will nearly fill most cars. My capital letters are the important details so you don't damage the compressor or burst a can. Wear safety glasses. Have fun. I hope this helps.
