long story stupid question. which way is out on fuel filter? towards passenger side?

it doesn't point toward front or back it points either towards passenger door or drivers,. I was in cramped situation since it quit running and had to work on it in yard. forgot to look at old one when I took it off cause fuel was pouring in my face . I t will almost start but then backfires and catches on fire. could be the starting fluid. lmfao
