removeing speed limiter

take it to a speed shop and have them tune it or send ur computer off to PCMforless.com they'll do it for you for like 100 bucks. or u can chip it any of them work.
buy a programmer and do it yourself, like a hypertech or something. i dont recomend it but u can if u know how too.
I had a GTP. Cost about a hundred bucks to reprogram the ECU. I had the speed limiter removed, shift points changed, and few other things done. I hit 186 mph on a straight here locally playing with a Vette that could not keep up. LOL
michael. my 1997 pontiac grand prix. has been bore out. with new piston heads, new headers, cold air intake. and a specially designed feul pump. it goes 0-60 in 4.2, it tops out at 110, there is no way. on gods green earth, that a car, only supercharged. is going to go 186 without any aero dynamic mods,
it only tops out because of the limiter
No offense taken, but with a 1" dropped & stiffened suspension, 16 lbs of boost, totally hand built engine from the bottom up, stand-alone ignition system, over 450 hp at the wheels, and a huge sack, it did. I love the heads up display. The only thing that kicked me out was my rev limiter. Hope you are enjoying your SE; but in my opinion, the GTP is a much better platform to start from. Only the little high school kids mess with the SE, anyway.

In addition reprogramming the PCM (most vehicles today use to limit vehicle speed), make sure your tires can handle the high vehicle speeds. I would strongly recommend as many here has mention that your transmission in addition to engine can also handle the high speed. And make sure the braking system can stop the car fast enough, in which upgrades is then strongly recommended.
I have a 2004 Grand Prix GTP factory condition. Less than 40,000 miles. I was on a trip that was an emergency. I ran at 80 regularly and up to 110 without a problem. There was a special highway condition that limited HP access. I don't even run premium on a regular basis. My Husband has been a car salesman for years. He's been to GM training. He says there is no speed limiter on my car. It may be there, but it hasn't hurt me. Of course, I don't have a straight track to run.
dude give him some slack, when you're low on money u buy what u can and do what u can with the car. my first car was a '00 Mustang LX that limited at 117 and it was a factory freak i beat GTP's in it not even kidding. My '97 Trans am spanks them. oh also a hand built engine with all the mods you have with 16lbs of boost should be running higher then 450whp. you should be up towards the mid 5's fyi. a friend of mine glenn, has a 4.0 v6 mustang with a d1sc intercooled Procharger with stock heads, internals, ignition. only has exhaust and intake for the procharger is putting out 430. so before you open ur mouth again research your car. god people and thier big mouths.
Josh, he is the one who opened his mouth, I was offering advice that he was looking for. Why you interjected your opinion baffles me. You speak of people talking smack, and yet you are bragging on your "boy's car." I hate when people open their mouth on things they know nothing about. If I had upgraded the exhaust, bored the cylinders, or even changed the heads from stock; I am sure the hp would have been in the mid 5's if not low 6's. I built it for streetability on the stock transmission; which everyone knows has its issues. A stock GTP only pushes out 248hp factory, you would expect your TA to "spank" them. I regularly made those little kids driving their daddy's TA's, Z28's, and GT's get laughed at by their friends. I even put a smack talking old man and his Porsche in their place (behind me). So please, do not open your mouth, if you do not know what you are talking about. Oh, and FYI, I knew that car inside and out. My car was dynoed at the "Hot Import Nights" at 453 whp
you didnt build a pontiac engine by hand and if you did it wouldnt work because youd screw something up. dumbass!!! think for once
thank you danny, ill have a look at the transmission, i don't know how its gonna do if the limiter comes out and it clunks a little going down to second, anything on that
You sound very immature. I have built more engines then you can count, from big blocks to 4 cylinders. I drove a 1971 Chevelle SS with a 454 my junior and senior years (1995-1997) to high school. I bought it for $1500 and had to rebuild the engine. I was just trying to help you find the information you were requesting. You attacked me first, why I am not sure. I gave you some advise and an example. Honestly I think the time and money you have invested in your car is a waste, but I did not start off that way. Oh, how was school today?
probably just needs a tranny flush with new fluid. but its hard to say without hearing it.
i like your logic josh, and he should know if he builds engines that there is a difference between a chevy big block 454, and a pontiac 3800, but hey . i guess he drove one so he should know,... HA HA HA o man. and i always wanted a TA, i could never afford one. ha ha. im going to uti, then off to wyo tech so i can know a little more than just small shop wonders.
ah its just like when you drop a few rocks on the ground. that type of sound
Well bravo, Josh. Just so you know, I sold that car almost 4 years ago at a car show. I have used the terminology in past tense for that reason. The stock exhaust on the car was very efficient, although i did remove the restrictive u-bend. The car was brand new at the time. Please quit being a jerk. Oh and the car averaged 18 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the hwy with the mods.
ur done talking man... that car didnt get any 30mpg on highway. my car stock got 26... so lets do the math. if you had 450hp v6 or not cus with horsepower comes with a loss of gas milage, at 285rwhp i would get like 34mpg roughly maybe high 30's. so your done man u just sound as dumb as 13 year old prepubecent boy who plays need for speed and gran turismo to much who goes around telling his friends hes getting a Nissan Skyline R-34 GTR. seriously man im being a jerk cus ur just pulling random number and parts that you have heard of before right out of ur ass to make urself sound cool. i'm ending this now.
oh and btw how were the one wheeled wonders i bet they were fun to do to at 450hp in an automatic.
you seem to know your output josh. you get the money out of the honda's, advice. go for 50 a race. it builds up
lol pretty much anyone stupid enough to think a stock 4cyl is fast will put money down. lol. i just dont race them anymore the occasional stop light to stop light i will but thats just when they have other people in there car it makes it worth while to know i insulted them infront of thier friends. lol.
ya try changing the tranny fluid and see if that stops it u might even look into putting a quarte of the lucas trany fix and see if that does it until u can get it looked at.
Josh, I am giving you real numbers. The car was factory equipped with a 4 speed electronically controlled transmission (I am sure you knew that). Factory mileage ratings on it was 18/28 (I am sure you were aware of that too). I logged the mileage on the Hot Rod Power Tour in 2002 and averaged 30 mpg on the highway using the tried and true method of taking the mileage driven divided by the fuel used. Believe if you wish, I honestly don't FKN care. I understand you are old school when it comes to cars. Classic v8's, nitrous, etc. I am sure you will tell me that it is not possible to make a GP outrun a viper. But is has happened. I am sure you will tell me that it is not possible to make an 8 second v6 powered car. That happened, too. I know what I had into that car. Feel free to comment what you like, but honestly it does not sound like you have ever owned one, nor have you shown any real evidence that you know that much about it. I have been involved in the drag racing industry since before I can remember, and also have had my share of engine building experience. Your theory is flawed. Increase of horsepower does not always effect gas mileage negatively. Lead foots do. Driving at 70 mph the GTP would sit between 2000-2500 rpm. Now on an entirely honest note I had that car many of times on averaging 12 mpg around town; but I was flogging the crap out of it.
........And you are so ignorant. The GTP was equipped with a LSD. I could smoke both wheels!
oop. both wheels. if you noticed only half of the power runs to the right front wheel. the left is the main drive wheel
The GNX was a TURBO Charged 3.8L V-6! And it was considered a joke when it came out. They offered the same engine in the Trans-ams that year too (1987). I know everyone is familiar with the Turbo T/A in 1981 (before the GNX), I am pretty sure it was well loved. And the GP's have a huge fan base, I am sure that makes them well loved, too.
no u are correct in gp's can beat viper's cus its all in the money, and i have seen 4 cylinders run 8's i've also seen v6's run 7's. but once again its all about the money. but the gas mileage there is pretty true because no matter what when u bring in more air u also must bring in more fuel to burn it correctly not rich but correctly. so to go from the 5-10lbs of stock pressure to 16lbs, u have to also increase ur fuel intake and consumption to burn it too. i know that superchargers dont always run at one psi and neither does a turbo, but a supercharger is almost constantly sucking in tho.
lets not forget about that all the 87 TTA's are now owned. oh everycar has fan bases even pugeot's have fans.
you are right, so maybe you should keep your opinion to yourself then. Many will think that the LT1 was the worst mistake GM ever made. Hell, they only used it for 5 yrs because of all of the problems with it; but you did well with it. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and should keep it to themselves.
even if like 100 i think the shop i use to work at was like 50-70. so its not bad.
and ur right im one of them just didnt have the money at the time to buy me a LS1 like i had wanted in the first place. but then again maybe i will run across a 98 or new WS6 then i can rebuild that.
Hey, I'd prettyh much like to have my speed limiter removed and the specs modified on my GT1...where did you send it off to? and how long were you unable to drive the car?
it varies from shop to shop, i know the one i use to do buisness back in KC (MC Racing) was $400 they considered it a custom tune, At that point i would've just had them tune my car into it as well. Just talk to some of the guys at ur local car meet places they can tell you who they used and what not.
this is off topic, but u seem to know what ur talkin about, i have a 2000 grand prix gt with 3.8, was getting 32 to 35 mpg, dropped to 23 to 27, i got a new air filter n fuel filter, no diff, added sea foam, i was told it could b mass air flow sensor or fuel pressure regulator, it gets a slight shake when accelerating sometimes, n idles funny for the first min after starting sometimes
it mite b ur MAF sensor. does it sometimes stall or does it kick funny when u are driving cz i had to change mine
not enogh information really, It'll be easier to say with more info, Like get it scanned look for a misfire code, if not then its a power stumble, then you should track the RPM range that it shakes in like low, medium, or high rpms. Next try unplugging sensors and taking it for a short drive if u suspect the MAF Sensor unplug it see if it stops the shaking. Personally I think you have a Oxygen Sensor problem. Either which case MAF or O2 A Service Engine Soon (SES) light should be emitted and if it is get it read Autozone should do it for free they cant read your sensor's like a good shop can, so if no code id really take it to a shop with a good scan tool that can watch your sensors. Do all that and let me know what goes on.
I'm going to assume its a GT since is cuts fuel sending at 110, but its all the same, you could either A: get a tuner for your pcm which could run you from 450 new and 250 used, OR B: go to zzperformance.com get the 1.0 PCM and send them your vin number, and stock pcm and it will remove limiter increase pressure in tranny lines for smoother firmer shifting, well worth the money or if you want a better more expensive PCM get one from DHP, but they are more expensive and you CANNOT tune them!
lmao, i know thats bull ish, considering the fastest gtp in the world only runs a quarter mile at 158 mph, but it does run it in 8.65 seconds, and im sorry but no gtp is going to get up to 186 mph with just a pcm flash, sorry dude, but my friends got a gtp with tog headers, tog downpipe, flowmaster exhaust a 180 thermostat, autolite 103s, a quickchange 3.4 pulley, wizard cold air intake, poly motor mounts, and msd wired, and the fastest hes had it was 152 mph, and on top of all of that a stock engine would not rev that high let alone the crankshaft hold together
youve lost your mind, a: you didnt dyno at 453 with 16 psi, at 16 psi you should run at least 550 whp or even higher
lmfao, my car with some mods done gets 32 mpg hiway and 25 town, and my buddies gtp gets 35 highway 26 town
wow my car must be hard on gas I only get 14.5L IN town got to be something run with my car...
i'm gonna believe you. skeptically, but i do. if you actually did everything you said, i've heard stories of killing vette's with gtps. 186 is a big number though man, how long did it take you to get there? do you have the stock supercharger? if you really did this, then i give you props. i wouldn't have started with a FWD platform, maybe a GTO or something because the torque would spin the wheels forever with a gtp. i'd love to see video.
amount of boost doesn't exactly equate to horsepower. the new cobalt SS turbocharged is getting 21lbs and i'm sure it's getting nowhere near mid-500hp lol.
i wouldnt say theres anything wrong with it, i drive it long distances every day so that helps my case. if your short trips ive seen my car go as low as 12 mpg in town. its nothing wrong with it, but a cold air intake and a new fuel filter will help your gas milage
main drive wheel wtf with an open diff as you are trying to say he has power whould be sent to the wheel with the least resistance, but the 4t65eHD has limited slip so that help make the power transfer equal to both wheels. and as for your comments on the 3800 engine funny it has the second largest aftermarket of any platform except the mustang. and the fastest fwd car in the world is a grand prix. on top of that my slow azz impala with a 3800 eats v6 mustangs like there standing still. just saying!

you cannot remove the limiters..its illegal but u can push the limit back..thats all tuning and pcm's do...a stock grand prix gt is lockd at 107mph...a gtp(supercharged) is over 120+mph stock...either purchase a PCM which does much more..cannot mod or upgrade without upgrading stock PCM...pro tune will cost a fortune...3 choices..pay for a pro...buy a PCM...or buy the hp tuners vcm tuning program and do it all yourself...ZZP PCM 1.0 is a good choice...zzperformance.com i bought it myself in my 1999 gtp...i have the hp tuners and the zzp pcm puts all shift points at 6000-6200rpm instead of 5600-5800rpm top speed is increased to 256mph which is impossible for a gtp to hit obv..
its not a speed limiter ,it rev limit ,its to keep the engine from over revving & blowing up.
@ Jason Listening too you talk like a fuckin smart ass is getting on my nerves I went too school for this shit and honestly learning hands on is the best way if Michael says his car does what he says it does trust him he knows more than you apperantly shit talkers like u just fuckin are on the Internet all day getting fat anyways iv done shit too my gtp most haven't done too there's every car is different people set there cars up all differantly u know nothing of his car what hp it produces gass mileage or anything about it at all so thut the fuck up and go look at your gay porn alright douch
@99GTP.. Punctuation is your friend. and apparently, spelling is not your strong suit...
@craig wow didn't know my English teacher was on here thanks for the correction fucker it's not like we're on an online forum or anything ... Thought we were talking about cars like men not in school anymore bud been out for a while u should get too bed now don't wanna be late too class son .
FYI, I had my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix in Colorado on a straight back road in the valley of two mountain ranges, very flat area for 100 miles open no body around, so I put my foot down and I hit 115 MPH then the Freckin RPM limiter hit stopped me slowed down to 95 then it let me go up again in speed, so I put it in 3 rd gear, out of 4th which is Over Drive, I pass the 115 MPH range and went up to 125 MPH but the RPM'S went up over 6200, was worried about the motor so I slowed down. I need to find a way to get rid of that Freckin RPM limiter and I know the car will hit 140 MPH stock with that great Over drive GM has in this car. Does Any one know a good place in near Wheaton Illinois, a speed shop, that can reprogram , remove or what ever this Freackin RPM limiter..??? Please email me at chris2@wowway.com Thanks People, Chris
So im gonna throw myself in this internet rumble.. i have a ALL stock gtp- cuts off at 110. I also spanked a 2001 GT that had flowmasters, wider tires, stage 3 cm clutch with pressure plate abd fly wheel, 6 spd us gear trans with lsd diff and hooker headers.. on to the next . These cars can be tuned and modded and still get low hp with outrageous boost. The Chevy Cruz has a turbo version that hits 21psi, which i also beat. The stock GTPs pull 6psi stock. I have a 1999 gtp with 205,000. Original trans, flipped dog bones, and original motor. I shift at 6000 wen in it.. so for everyone, every car runs different. If you cam and tune it with a ported blower you can pull 40mpg/ 35mpg, ive seen ppl pull 20psi with a xp cam and e85 conversion getting 41mpg/34mpg
Mark, Not really help full, as I need to get the RPM limiter off my car, ot least remove it so the Over Drive can take the car over 115 MPH. I know the car can do well and once I get rid of this RPM speed limiter I can get to 140 MPH. My question is does any one know of a place that can Take the RPM Speed limiter off the car? Reprogram it, and I by it I mean the PCM which stands for Power train Control Module which is an electronic unit that controls one or more of the electrical systems or subsystems in a motor vehicle. It is an automotive unit also known as electronic control unit (ECU) that is embedded in the car system. The PCM is designed to do one or a few dedicated functions often with real-time computing constraints. This unit also stops a car, VIa the FEDERAL Government from going over 110 to 115 MPH, so my question is: Does any one know of a speed shop or Auto Shop, IN or near Wheaton IL, that can reprogram this PCM card to go to an unlimited speed or RPM?
Hey, i have a 1996 grand prix 3.4 completely stock it'll go around 110mph then she shuts down. This really kills me when i meet up with imports as they got more than that on the top end. Not much but its still more. I'd really like to find out how to get it unlocked(governor removed). Can these cars be chipped or reprogrammed. If so where could i get this done and around how much would it cost. Or would i have to buy a programmer and if i were to buy one would it always have to be plugged in to the car to have it unlocked and how much would it cost me.
Wow umm I just wanted to know what do I need from A-Z to swap out a 3.8ltr engine & drop a 5.3 v8(LS4) engine into a 05 GP?
As always google it or go directy to the place of purchase.
I have a 04 comp G it hits 30mp at 80 mph witch it didn't do when I first got it the horse power I've been adding has been giving me much better gas mileage while traveling..
Can someone please answer the question and stop weighing each others balls cuz man this is some ol bs

I'm wanting to install a supercharged 3.8L from a 2002 GTP into my 1995 B4U-R SE Coupe. kno I need the ECM and the wiring harness for the engine compartment. What else am I facing in this changeover?
too many fish stories ! Cadillac 400 horse 200 mph big boy toy!
Get a 1977 Camaro strait six they are unlimited the faster you go the more powerful they get
How much does it cost to remove speed limiter and increase ratio

Any recommendations for a built transmission, or even what kits I can get to upgrade the stock one to handle more power. It has a 4t65e-hd.
The only way a GTP is going to go faster then 180 MPH is if it fell off the moon, that said my stock 2004 GTP compG 3.8 supercharger goes faster then the rev limited speeds listed here. The only thing I have changed so far is a stage 1 performance transmission with shift kit a 2800 stall converter w/transcooler from tru cool, cold air induction, oil catch can, upgraded brakes, high performance fuel pump and filter,

Lol who tf supes up a Grand Prix? 186?? Lmao. Found this page after bombing a long hill in the desert and thought I ran out of gas. Tune & kit a Solstice or drop an LS in it if you wanna go ham w a Pontiac. Bikes are the real business
