what is the best way to get better gas mileage?

1. Tire Pressure - make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Under-inflated tires have greater rolling resistance because they deform against the road. It's like walking in sand versus walking on concrete. It's less efficient to maintain the same speed on a softer surface than on a hard surface. 2. Keep the engine running well - Make sure your oil is changed regularly. The general rule is 3000 miles or 3 months, but newer cars can last longer between oil changes. Check the oil on your dipstick, if it's dark instead of a golden brown, or feels gritty when you rub it between your fingers it's time for a change. I may also be a good idea to use a fuel additive like an octane booster or fuel injector cleaner, and make sure you have a clean air filter. 3. Drive efficiently - Accelerate and brake slow and steady. The faster you accelerate, the more fuel you use, and if you brake hard you'll need to accelerate that much more to get back up to speed. Use cruise control on the highway and stick to the speed limit. This reminds me of a Top Gear segment where a BMW 3 Series got better gas mileage than a Prius, simply because of driving style. The Prius had to use more gas in order to keep up with the larger engined BMW around the Top Gear track.
okay if your gonna leave the car stock, to be honest if you start driving the car like a grampa your going to get worse mileage, yes it is important that you drive steady, but if you excellerate to slow you will actually get a worse total mpg than you would have if u got up at a constant rate, remember that you will get better fuel mileage at a high constant speed. 45 and above usually gets around 25 to 28 mpg in my 2000 grand prix, dont be to light with the pedal but flooring it is out of the question when shooting for mileage, and coast as much as possible to stops, down hills, and through turns. if your gonna upgrade it the cheapest ways to increase mpg's are gonna be a cold air intake or just a clean are filter, and theres a new type of spark plug that will help your car burn fuel more effeiciently and can increase ur mileage by a few mpg's there called E3 diamond fire sparkplugs
ohh and andy, i own a toyota prius, and the reason it gets better mileage because of slower excelleration is because at those slower speeds it uses the electric engine. A comparison between a hybrid and a high horsepower bmw is useless when talking about better mileage in a pontiac grand prix. What allows the prius to get its mileage is coasting to charge its battery and accelerating slow to use its battery more, thats why in japan it gets 60 mpg and in missouri where i live it gets around 48. It functions better in low speed low acceleration areas. for instance tokyos top speed on a highway is somthing like 30 mph and ours is around 60 to 70, the prius only gets 45 on the highway when it gets 50 to 60 in town and on top of that bmw's are in general known for crappy gas mileage, my friends straight 6 bmw gets 15 in town and 21 highway
you guys really need to learn how to spell acceleration and I love my 1994 Grand prix only thing is it didnt come with a manual so i really am trying to find out how large the gas tank is and ive gotten 35 mpg with it btw you guys reallly just need to drive better lol so ya if anyone at all has any idea on what the gas tank size is that would be very helpful
