Will a 2002 3.8 pontiac grand prix engine fit into a 2007 3.8 Grand Prix body.

Asked by daughterstoy Feb 09, 2013 at 08:33 AM about the Pontiac Grand Prix

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter had a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix that was rear ended and totaled by the insurance co. We bought it back cause we know the engine and transmisson is a good one. We have been looking for a body to put it in and came across a 1997 Grand Prix for a good price. Will the motor from a 2002 3.8 Grand Prix fit into a 1997 body.

If the bolt patterns are the same, the dimensions are the same, you can break out the wiring diagram to see which wires go wires go where...then it can be done-

There was a body change from 2002 to 2007 2nd generation wide body to 3rd gen. w-body, what I was worried about was a possible change in wheel base, but good news is they are both 110.5. The 2002 3.8L was the L36 and in 2007 it was the L 26 depending on what body you have really. Transmissions where the same, but the biggest issue may be the electronics from 2002 - 2007 so that would be interesting as least to me, to see what develops on that end of things as their was a lot of changing like paddle shifter came in and without knowing precisely what body you have you may have more than a few surprises, but with that said and that you are even thinking about giving it a go, then you must know what your up against to a degree. Then again perhaps you may be thinking of buying all the parts and having someone else put it together, that would be a reasonable thought. Here is a link and I have linked you to the Pontiac 2002 engine and you can back page to go to look at diagrams, like WIRING for the 2007, check PCM to PCM and cluster gauges etc. as I am nearly positive that the control modules between cars is going to be an issue,,good luck and here is the link.........http://www.tonkinonlineparts.com/productSearch.aspx?&ukey_make=1092&modelYear=2002&ukey_model=15778&ukey_trimLevel=19508&ukey_driveline=8683&ukey_Category=22488&numResults=50&sortOrder=Relevance&isOnSale=0&isAccessory=0&isPerformance=0&searchTerm=

2002 motor will fit fine in the 1997 body. Just check to make sure the sensors are all the same. IF they aren't just swap them with the old motor/
