Popping/grinding sound coming from rear end

Asked by wallymar10 Mar 29, 2011 at 08:31 AM about the Jeep Cherokee

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Only noticeable from start and low speeds; turning or straight, there's usually not much difference.  Had 3 brakes jobs and the last one didn't even keep it hidden before I left the garage's parking lot.  Differential?  Bearings?  It's happened twice before since I've had it, and dealer was able to fix it(or mask it), but I don't have the $800-1000 to drop on it right now and can't find an invoice that references it to see what was done.

sounds like bearings, if it has disc brakes, look at how close the pad and caliper is to the rotor, if it changes after driving it, it is the bearings. Parts and labor for a rear end rebuild ranges from $350-$650. you wanna make sure they replace the friction clutches too while they're in there.
