NOISY REAR END DOES IT NEED REPLACEMENT

Asked by Guru998WJ8 Oct 14, 2020 at 02:27 PM about the Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2005 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE has a rump. rump, rump noise coming from
the rear end. Dealer says ring and pinon are worn an cannot be adjusted.
Wants $2,500 to replace with a used deferential. Can ring and pinon be
adjusted or would adding 140 weight lube to deferential help. Noise is
mostly
on acceleration and is nor that loud. Dealer says rear end will fail. Older
ring
and pinons on older other cars could be reset/adjusted. Jeep is a HEMI with
Quadradrive II with lockers

The ring and pinions are adjusted at assembly, if yours is worn, no adjustment will help. Adding a thicker weight might help the noise , but the rear diff will fail soon after. Try and find a used unit to keep costs down, or a shop that will rebuild it for you and replace the ring and pinion, which would be far cheaper than replacing the whole unit or axle.
