1984 Towncar severe hesitation

Question type: General

Sometimes, on flat roads, you can feel a little hesitation, almost feels like going over small ripples in the road. If going up a very steep hill, I have to shift to 2. If the speed gets below 60, I get very bad hesitation and "balking", or shaking, with a lot of pinging. You can barely finish getting up the hill. Then fine on flat road again.

I have replaced the fuel filter and plug wires, also checked the timing. Could this be something in the computer. I'm not sure what to look at. Has anyone experienced similar behavior.
Thanks very much, Bob.

Have you checked your dist cap and rotor button? Are the plug wires back on in the correct order?

Go with dandyoun. Sounds like a spark problem - most likely the wires or boots at the plugs. Be sure to purchase and use a Dielectric Compound in the plug wire ends (both ends) and a little dab on the contacts inside the distributor cap too. One way to locate a bad spark plug wire is to warm the engine up, block the wheels, set the parking brake and spray (mist) soapy water on the plug wires - especially at the spark plugs. If you have a bad boot or a cracked plug, it will miss and there will be a "tick" sound accompanied by a small blue flash. In other words, the soapy water will cause the failure to show up by conducting the spark away from the plug. Kinda cool when you find a bad one. Plugged EGR causes predetonation - "ping" if you will.
