What do I do about my power steering?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Really I have two questions here.  My mechanic says that my power steering hose/tube has a leak and the whole thing needs to be replaced.  Is it easy to do this myself?  Is it reasonable for my mechanic to charge 792.00 for this kind of service?

HAHA no it is not reasonable... lol. The tubing is basically one long bent-to-fit piece of aluminum so you have no choice but to "replace the whole thing". Depending on where the leak is you might want to have a lift available, but if it is the piece just to the left of the engine when you pop the hood, you can replace it relatively easily. If you buy the part and live near NYC, I'll do it for you for $100.

It's not good Idea to remove the power steering, but it is a fairly easy job to do. I had to replace the High Pressure Power Steering Hose on my 2001 Infiniti I30 and it was fairly easy. I got the part for $70 dollars, and Installed it myself.
