could the trip meter in my accord be in need of recalibration?

Asked by elhr40_ Jul 18, 2015 at 07:25 PM about the Honda Accord

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

As I mentioned before, my milage is 20-21.5 mpg. I don't have hills and try not to
accelerate to start out after traffic lights.  I do encounter many lights and stops daily but
my friends do the same and have 26 mpg.  Has anyone found that trip meters can be
broken or just need recalibration?

OK, are you talking about the trip odometer or the trip computer that gives you an estimate of your mileage. I have to emphasize it's just an estimate! Don't get wigged out on this, they're not always accurate and just because your friend has the same vehicle, doesn't mean they'll be the same. Now, if you are really talking about the trip odometer, a mechanic will have to remove your speedometer and send it to a special shop that deals with that. You're not going to be able to fix this yourself.

I will try to zero out the trip meters and drive the car at 45 miles an hour for 2 straight miles ( not on the highway). I want to see the mpg then.

Try this, refill your gas tank, preferably in the evening when it's cooler and reset your odometer. If you have a reset button for your computer, reset that to. You're going to probably have to drive more than two miles to notice a difference, I would think more like 10 miles. If you have a button that says mpg, it will probably give you the new mileage estimate. The very best and still most accurate way is to start from zero on your odometer and drive for an entire tank of gas, refill and divide the number of miles into how many gallons you refilled with. So, if you went 300 miles divided by 10 gallons, it would be 30 miles per gallon. Hope that helps.
