Is it possible to import a pre 1998 Astro into France?

I bought a BMW Z3 supplied in Arabia that was fully imported into the UK and it took me 6 months to import it into France (the UK doesn't seem to meet the European Compliance tests ). I also have an old Toyota LiteAce a Japanese import that is impossible to reimport into France.
I would now like to buy a Chevrolet Astro camper (not white)!  Chevrolet (Europe) indicated that pre 1998 models are very difficult to import into France. Has anyone been through the homologation process for this vehicle?

Don't know about France, but I have some experience importing to Finland from the US, and my guys over in Finland tell me that for one thing, the newer the vehicle, the higher the registration tax on it. Also, not sure on the age cutoff, but many if not all vehicles imported need to have different lights and glass than come standard on US stuff, so you may run into a problem finding the right conversion parts. I would contact your French DMV or equivalent and see what the regs. are.
