Z71 stands for an off-road package that is available for certain Chevy trucks. The option is also available on some SUV models. It mostly refers to a stronger suspension, skid plates and 4x4 capabilities. So you can have a z71 pick up or a z71 avalanche.

An Avalanche can have the Z71 (off-road) package. Likewise, so too can other Chevy trucks & SUVs. I had looked at Silverado and Tahoe Z71 outfitted trucks / SUVs before I settled on the 2009 Avalanche LT that is in my garage (an Avalanche Z71 was on my shopping list, but was gone before I could get to CarMax).
