I don't have it in front of me, but the "Standard Catalog of Chevrolet" available at bookstores, would have detailed breakdowns of how many had this engine vs. other options. http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chevytalk/GMhistory/CHEVROLET1958.html
60000 58 impalas were made There is no production figures for specific engines but the guess is that about 10% or 6000 were 6 cyl. I am the original owner of a 235 straight 6 cyl Impala bought July 1 1958. I have been to 100s of car show over the years and have never seen a 6 cyl. I have seen 2 advertised for sale in the last 25 years. Because most of the 6 cyl have had larger engines replace the 235 on restoration my guess is there are only about 6 original 6 cyl 235 left. Anyone have any thoughts.
I went to car shows in the late 80's / early 90's with a guy that had a '58 Impala / 6 cyl. I had and still have a '58 Yeoman / 2 dr. Both were Cashmere Blue, they looked good side by side. This guy told me Chev made 300 / 6 cyl Impalas, never ck it out. Don't plan on changing my 6 for a 8. Love the wagons, looking for a Yeoman body with windows, but has lift gate, not split tail gate, That is rare, seen some.
