service engine soon light stays on and when fueling up pump repeatedly shuts off

First, since service light is on, get the codes pulled. Any auto parts store can do this for free. You may have an issue with the EVAP system, which would explain why the gas pump constantly shuts off while pumping gas. (They're designed to do that when pressure builds up on the fill neck.) I suspect your tank isn't venting properly. That could be due to a bad vent solenoid, crimped vent line, or fouled EVAP charcoal canister. (regularly over-pumping gas can leave it gas-soaked.)
Thank you guys in a Super way because both answers cite a possible issue causing the problem. Again thanks and both have narrowed down a path for resolutions. You guys have made my week end in my search for an answer. Extremely helpful - both. Johnny B.
