When I plug in the temperature ascending unit, the motor speeds up. Unplug it, it slows back down. What could cause this?

Most temp. sensors that goes to engine computer determines if ecm is in open or closed loop. I think open loop is below 57 deg. F. you can check your sensor with scanner. should be within a couple degree's of actual engine temp. The colder the coolant sensor reading is the more fuel ecm gives engine. Just like the carburetor does with choke. Check your sensor reading and see what the reading is.
That would be engine coolant temperature sensor. ECT A temperature sending unit would operate the temperature gauge indicator.
The sending unit? or the ECT ? ECT sensor would be connected to affect runability, you must mean
