2008 Chev diesel with 64K miles had the engine light come on and message that engine has reduced power. Runs like it is fuel starved. Mechanic has had it all day and cannot diagnose the problem. First time I've had any trouble. I keep the filters changed. Anybody have some thoughts?

I don't know diesel engines but this sure sounds like a Throttle Positioning Sensor or a broken wire in its wiring harness right by the plugin for the TPS. Wires have a tendency to break inside the insulation at the plugin. This is a common problem for 2000 to 2010 Chevy V8 gas engines.
Do you have a check engine light on? Are there any codes? On my `05 there was a retrofit kit on the plug for 2 of the injectors (pass front, driver rear). that sounds like the symptom when 1 or more injectors aren't working.
We had a 2008 diesel, 2500 silverado. A bacteria was growing in the fuel tank. Went through 8 fuel filters in 2 months. Had to drop tank and have cleaned out by hand, replace modules, etc. and still gave us problems. We ended up trading it for a one ton. Not encouraging, but sounds like what we went through. Got same message all the time.
I have the same symptoms. The code on the diagnostic tool said it was a bad crankshaft positioning sensor. Got a new one on Amazon for about $35 and am in the process of finding out where it is located and how to replace it.
