why does my dodge caravan shift from drive to low at about 40 mph

at normal highway speeds, the transmission is fine but when I slow down to about 40 mph
the car shifts out of drive to a lower gear. I stop turn off car and start it again. It works ok
for awhile until the next time.

There's a computer that controls the transmission. Sounds like yours is having a bad day every now and then. Not sure that this is a permanent fix but try to disconnect the battery for about a half hour. That will reset it. And if the transmission gods are smiling on you, all will be good.

Check the transmission for codes and data. There is a fail-safe in the Transmission Computer to shift into a lower gear if there is a problem. It will reset if you stop the vehicle and turn off the engine, but will happen next time the problem happens.
