It is an AUTOMATIC so you do not need to manually place the car in one of those selections - unless you choose to based on driving conditions. Examples would be going down a steep incline or starting from stop while carrying a heavy load, Think of it this way, the higher the number (1 thru 6) fewer RPM's of the engine are needed to keep your car at any given speed. They represent the number of gears your automatic will shift through while going from a stop to cruising down the road. Whether you are doing in-town driving or open road cruising, let the transmission pick the gear you should be using. Transmissions these days are smarter than we are for normal driving conditions.
