Thank you.. but my warranty went out at 36,000 so dealership wont do anything.. I'm goin to have to take It to a mechanic but just dont know anyone in my area. My mpg is now down to 10.9 and this has just been about 3 hours since i posted my question.
It’s easy to guess, but take it to an honest dealer known for good mechanics. There *is* a specific driveability test during the test drive that would have replicated the symptoms. Saying “gee I dunno” is their way of avoiding doing warranty service at FIAT reimbursement rates. No idea why you’re paying $500 for in-warranty service. I assume you were suckered into changing plugs, wires, filters, etc. when they knew very well there’s no way that’s your problem at 39,000 miles. You need someone to put down the scan tool and use the other tests in the Chrysler manual to find the valley part. It *might* be a sticky idle air control, or a flakey throttle position sensor gummy manifold air pressure sensor, flakey am position sensor, sticky fuel pressure regulator, essentially something in the engine management loop isn’t broken outright to fail the self-checks, but it isn’t functioning correctly. If the mechanic snapped a freeze frame when it was in hesitation mode he might see a “wrong” value, but imay have to compare with a snapshot from a car accelerating correctly, if still no joy, then it’s a something not monitored at all like the engine compression, intake manifold gaskets, the fuel pressure etc. the dealer knows all this, so don’t go back where you went before, find somewhere people say good things about the mechanics. Even if it’s not convenient.
That sounds an awful lot like a hard shift issue caused by a bad torque converter. Many newer vehicles with CVT dual clutch automatic transmissions are experiencing torque converter issues. Usually the manufacturer might try to update the software that controls the drivetrain, along with performing a transmission flush service to try and correct the issue. If the issue is not corrected by this method the manufacturer will most likely replace the transmission, assuming the vehicle is under factory warranty.
Also, believe you me, these manufacturers are well aware of the torque converter issues and they may or may not have an update or a solution to repair the issue. Good luck with the issue you are having and understand that there are politics at play every time you visit a car dealership for both sales AND service. I'm not condoning bribery at all but consider buying the Service Manager/ Advisor coffee and donuts or have pizza delivered to the service drive to feed the advisors. Try not to lose your cool when you are experiencing frustration with your vehicle and remember the service advisors didn't engineer your vehicle nor did they cause it to fail (hopefully...). Sometimes dealerships are not the easiest people to deal with, solely because some of them operate by maintaining complete and total control over their guests/ customers. The best way to deal with them is by first showing them that you appreciate their work towards helping you, then by respectfully and directly expressing what you expect and what you will not accept. Sometimes you have to go up the chain of command and sometimes the gloves even have to come off before someone will budge on their offers/ expectations. Bad publicity is something that a car dealership wants no part of and there are ways to showcase your experience to the public, good or bad. Worst case scenario, be prepared with your lawyer to go to court over an issue and don't think twice about it if that's what it comes to. 9/10 times the dealership will fold before it ever has to get to court...
