My 1998 dodge neon temp gauge goes to the red when I start car

Check wire going to temp sensor. If it's burnt or touching metal (grounded out)this will happen. Remove wire from sensor and gauge should go to 0. If not look for wire issues(burnt on exhaust manifold). If does go to 0 replace the sensor it's bad.
