Chevy HHR is knocking and shutting off at stops

Asked by Sandrag0725 Nov 30, 2016 at 11:09 AM about the Chevrolet HHR

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My chevy HHR is making a knocking noise while
driving and is shutting off at stops, but turns back
on when I put it in neutral. Could it be a cracked
head? Help please!

A hard knock could be from a bad rod bearing. Pinging can be from gasoline with too low octane. A cracked head might cause water to get into the engine but you would have lots of white exhaust smoke. Check the engine for water in the oil and oil in the coolant.
