Honestly, fuel efficient and great in snow does not go well together. I work for a company who has an impressive fleet of AWD and 4WD. We noticed that v6 engines are outperforming 4cyl and hybrid awd. Heavier SUV are not exceptionally good on ice and snow. In fact, all 4wD were pretty bad on ice surface. So far, the vehicle who impressed me the most was the older models Ford Escape XLT. They were so good in snow that all employees will fight to get the Ford on the shift during winter. I would avoid everything equipped with a Turbo except turbo diesel.
Toitoine, have you seen YouTube videos of people driving Subaru Outbacks in really muddy and snow conditions? If not, you should. When other cars got stuck, the Subaru made it through the most difficult situations.

Kelly, who goes fast in the snow? Sure, the Vette is fast, but, someone I chatted with on this forum with a Corvette told me his car is so low to the ground, he can't even roll over a snail without hitting it. An exaggeration, of course, but, he was making a point in telling me how low the clearance is compared to my Subaru Outback. My point on the Outback is this, they're probably the most widely used car in the northeast and northwest in snow country. I don't have to worry about this in SoCal, but, it's nice to be prepared. I do take road trips in my car. And, the 2.5 Four while not a race car, which no one even dreamed of saying, is perfectly adequate for getting the Outback through all of these situations. So, not really hard on gas and a good car for snow and muddy conditions.
