I will assume that the '99 has the vortec 5.7 L (350). Yes it can be done but if you want to keep the multiport FI of the 99 truck the '88 will need to be modified. Everything from the heads and up need to be swapped. The intake manifolds bolt onto the heads differently, therefore you need vortec heads to used the newer FI.
If I don't want to keep the multiport fi is it easier it's my old plow truck I do drive it around some

No. Worse. What transmissions do the trucks have.
It's a 3/4 ton automatic with OD so I'm thinking 700r4?
yetilikesbeer answered 10 years ago
The 3/4 ton is the '99. That would be a 4L80e. What about the 88, what tranny.
yetilikesbeer answered 10 years ago
Ok the '88 would have the 700r4. Choices. Uuuuum.
I'm thinking maybe just putting the 99 heads and intake on the 88 would be the way to go

Yes. I've been trying to research a cheaper faster method but I have not been successful. The issue is the intake manifold. Since the vortec heads are better than the ones used on the TBI engine there is nobody that I can find that builds vortec MPFI intakes that will bolt up to the older style heads. This would be the fastest repair for sure. If you are handy and careful this can be done diy. The 383 in my profile pick was the first one I did a top end on, followed the instructions and it was good (the first set of heads were cracked though not my fault).

Most of the info that I, found people were using aftermarket intakes and aftermarket fuel rails and injectors then connecting to the MPFI computer. This would be $1000 minimum and would involve custom fabing.
Is this when a free 1988 350 becomes not so free anymore
I'm going to switch heads and intake unless I find something else to stuff in it

Free is good. I could use it?? The only other options are a wee bit redneck. (FYI Your PCM runs your motor and tranny). 1.) You could install the '88 motor and computer and retain your PCM to run the tranny. This would work but it would be a nightmare to get everything to work. 2.) Swap the '88 to a carb and retain your PCM to run the tranny. 3.) Buy fuel rails and injectors and mount onto your TBI intake, gut the TBI and use as the trottle body (modify TPS and IAC wiring).
I do have a 1967 396 bb on the stand SS plow truck
yetilikesbeer answered 10 years ago
If the bottom end went out of yours you could look for another vortec to throw your heads on. Most of the vortec 5.7's here have good bottom ends, the heads crack?? I believe the 99 has roller lifters and the 88 has regular hydraulic. Just cross reference all parts lenghts dimesions. I believe the roller lifters will work from the Vortec but don't quote me.

Yes, I'm game. But the 700r4 will shit it's guts. LOL. My plow has a 350 with the muncie 4spd, 205, 44HD and 14 bolt rear. Now with 35's Or SS '99. F fuel economy.
My step father bought a 1977 gmc new he just gave it to me and my wife the cool part is I was born in 77 so we're going to put the 396 in that and of course lift kit tires and are kid's college fund
yetilikesbeer answered 10 years ago
Nice. I believe my Jimmy is a '78. I still have not owned a BB.
I have had this one for 15 years it be longed to my best friend he passed away when I was 21 so it's got a lot of sent a mental value to me with that said it's time to feel what 396 Ci feels like

One more tid-bit that I found. The Vortec blocks have an internal water pump bypass that is self contained where as the older blocks have the internal bypass with a return passage to the block under the lower bolt. The vortec water pump will not utilize this hole and it must be plugged. They are just using a npt tap and a hex head flush pipe plug to block the hole in the older blocks on the vortec forums. Just figured I'd let you know.

I'm looking at buying a 99 Suburban with a 5.7 liter vortec is it possible to swap it over to an 89 305?
I bought an 87 GMC 2500 with a 350 out of a 79 vette. The motor is tired and needs to be swapped out. So I purchased another 87 with a 350. I have a set of vortech heads but I am gonna run a regular hydraulic lifter cam not a roller. Should I change the valve springs?

I would use 993 heads and a midrise carb intake 650cfm carb. A points or at least A HEI dist. Git rid of the 4L60 and the 700r4. And use SM465 manual transmission. As for the transfer case I would use a NP241C. You do this and no more computer BS to never to go wrong and will last longer
I am using a performance 1988 engine and only swapped the cam to a TBI and used 1988 intake with a TBI adapter plate works just fine passed smog and burns rubber.
The vortecs have a crank sensor and the pre vortecs don't how do you go about make it work in a 97 cause the bolt hole on the timing chain cover are different
Can I put a 1989 350 crank in a 1978 block?
Are all 350's the same? I have a timing chain for an 81 camaro, and i was wondering if it would fit in a 91 5.7 350 engine.
How about a GMC 1985 3500 dump with 350 and automatic transmission both swap into a 2001 GMC 3500 dump?
