1997 Mercedes SL 500

I have a 97 Mercedes SL 500 and I can’t find anyone to replace the Key - from
what I understand the company that made the keys has gone out of Business -
dealerships cant replace and called Mercedes Benz USA and they said they
were “working on it” - it apparently they have been working on it for 2 years
HELP !!

you can still get the valet key for them, wont be a flip key but at least you will have access to your car.
So with the valet key you can actually start the car ?

The specific microchip used in all the 1997 and similar MBZ cars was discontinued by the manufacturer about 12 years later. MBNA put out a "last call" to their dealers. Obviously, the number requested did not include anticipated orders from owners who own what will soon be called "classic" MBZ. I can't comment about "planned obsolence" but another move by Daimler to "biodegradable" wiring insulation in the early 1990s strongly suggests they had ulterior motives.
