stupid q here: modern day or ever? For modern it was the Vario roof, in 1996, (made 2 years earlier).

Lift off hardtop (literally pick up and lift off) appeared on the SL first, 107 chassis i think (correct me if i'm wrong). Electronically folding hard tops were used on SLK models from around about 96' - 97' (again correct me if i'm wrong).

yes, correct, the 96 slk was called a Vario roof, actually made and introduced in 94....

Mine was 1998 slk230 retractable hard top roadster. Kompressor. I understand 1998 was 1st year retractable hardtop was produced. That top was a ballet to watch. Beautiful
