Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have replaced the fuel pump, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, and
computer. We have checked all the relays and fuses they are all good. Any
help would be much appriciated.

air, fuel, spark, timing...cam timing...the fault lies with one of these~ you've got an air filter, you've got a new fuel pump (but do you have fuel pressure?) have you checked voltage at the coil? have you checked the ASD relay to make sure that it is enabled? have you looked at the timing marks?

More information is needed- you say it doesn't start- does the engine turn? Is it getting spark? Is it getting fuel?

Its cranking over but no start. Its not getting fuel or spark. We have checked the asd relay its working.

excellent, hate to suggest "starter spray---ether" but now that we have spark and fuel, should kick right over...do you hear fuel circulating through the fuel rail when you put the key to the 'on' position?

No that's the problem. We are getting power everywhere but still will not start. Fuel pump doesn't even kick on. We have even put two different diagnostic tools on it and is not pulling up any codes.

aha...the emergency fuel cutoff switch...have you tapped bumpers to snap it off?...there could be a reset button under the dash, near the fuel tank...kick panel...fords, and gm have them dodge has a "red button" somewhere...this one you need to press to enable the fuel pump if you can find it....if you know that the truck has been smacked in the front (maybe when it was towed?) disabling the high pressure source~....magic button...yes~(sounds grimms fairy tale, but most possibly)

okay here's the dope~ should be in the fuse box on the side of the dash on driver's side. If you can't find it just pull the fuse going to the fuel pump If your are looking for an inertia switch, it is not a Ford, there isn't one. ...that doesn't help, but what I've found on the subject~

49 people found this helpful.

"pulled it"? not quite sure what now...hopin' to get your fuel pump happy with 12 volts going to it~ The source for this power goes through the ignition switch, a fuse a relay before it gets to your fuel pump~...perhaps an emergency fuel cutoff, but you'd think they'd run that one through the Automatic Shut Down relay...wouldn't you?

if you've got power to the fuel pump...and it still ain't pumpin' would have to suggest that it is bad~ooooo sorry~

Ya we are thinking we are going to have to take it to dodge and let them figure it out.

About 2 years ago my 98 ram 5.9 died at idle in the dead of Minnesota winter and would not start up again. I replaced the can and crank sensors coil distributor and various other parts that I thought may might cause it. After all the headaches I pulled the valve cover on the right bank and low and behold I dropped the number 7 intake valve. Was able to put everything back together even after the valve hit the piston (piston still good) and never lost compression. This happened at about 165000 miles. To this day it still runs like a champ and has 202000. All dodges have that issue whether 318 or 360.

chassis grounds. go through and clean up all your grounds. a good one to start with is behind the drivers side headlight where the cruise control module normally is. get a distributuion box (8 channel) clean your ground post(not battery tho u could clean it too) and put 4 new ground wires running to the dist. box. 1 to each channel. seperate all accessory grounds and clean them up. seperate them into 4 manageable bunches and put new eyes on. run a maximum 2-3 wires to an eye. each eye gets ran to a grounded channel on the dist box. then u need to ground the dist box. i used a ceiling fixture mounting plate and grounded that seperatly using the green ground terminal screw

I've got a 98 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 5.9. Was driving down the road and the truck died. Pulled over to restart and no luck. First thing I noticed was the fuel pump wasn't turning on. Replaced with a new one and still no power to it. Checked the fuses and relays. While trying to restart with new fuel pump I noticed the odometer was flashing. I was told maybe the ECM so I replaced it as well. No luck there. No codes before and none now. Will only crank.

Happened to my 98 318 yesterday while towing a boat uphill. All sensors, fuel pump, ign. wires, cap & rotor changed within 5K miles. NO CEL. Acting like out of fuel but tank full. Tweaked coil wire at coil. Started fine.. Put in Drive.. Stalled again within 10 seconds. This time removed and reseated coil wire at Coil and Distributor. Jiggled power wire to coil connection. Started fine and got home.. Ordered new coil. Will update...

Even after replacing the coil, same thing happened to me yesterday. At least it starts if you wait 3-5 minutes after it stalls. I guess I was wrong about replacing ALL sensors.. looks like I missed one.. so I am going to try replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor now.. it seems to match the symptoms.... randomly stalling and then restarting with a short rest... Will update again..

Replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor resolved my issue.

On my 97 I had same issues. No fuel no spark. Replaced everything that could be related and still no luck. I ended up cutting the 8 volt supply for crank, cam and vehicle speed sensor at the pcm. Soon as I did everything worked like new.

A no start Cummins can also mean a non functioning electronic clutch fan. Or a burnt electric door lock fuse... yeah, no kidding it took days to figure that one out..

I have a 1986 Dodge Ram w150 and it won't start, it cranks fine but won't initially start but i've noticed when ever i take the ECU Module off and put it back on again it starts no problem. i don't know what that could mean.

To everyone out there with these issues ~This may help you and if it does please let me know at dhumm1969@gmail.com I understand your frustration but try not to give up on the old goat. The problem could very likely be in the Power Distribution Module (fuse box under hood) they corrode underneath and loose connection from the power source to the fuse. You will have to disconnect the harness and wiring but when you do free it up have a look underneath and you may see your issue. When you find which fuse it is make a note and put it back together and run a jumper wire from any 12 volt power source direct and it will fire right up. I have an interior household light switch on my dash and that works my fuel pump just fine. I hAVE ANOTHER JUMP WIRE FOR MY INTERIOR AND FOG LAMPS LOL (but it works right? Good luck brothers I hope that helps some of you guys just wanting to blow the bitch up for not firing :o) Dave Hummel

98 b1500 (v6 van) thanks for all the input. Same symptoms of all of you. I’ll try some of the ideas you all have and get back to the forum when I finish. I’m going under the hood to see about that power distribution block.

I have 98 Ram 5.2, engine was misfiring and smoking, I replaced my plenum gasket, ran ok, changed crankshaft sensor and it ran better. Through a code for O2 sensor. Replaced it. Ran like a champ!! Misfired one time while driving and then further down the road it died! No spark, no power to fuel pump but it has fuel pressure. Gas gauge does not work and it has a full tank. No power to the coil and all the relays work. Anyone with an idea of what it might be???

I experienced this same issue. Starting up and shutting off everytime i put it in gear. It would idle high (1100-1500rpm) then shut off and wouldnt start for about 10 mins. With a strong fuel smell.. Soo... After changing tps.. Iac valve.. Map sensor.. Cap n rotar. The issue was Still there.. After some tinkering with the wiring harness. We noticed the COOLANT TEMP SENSOR was disintegrate at the plug.. So long story short. Check ur temp sensor.. It will send info to the pcm tellin it it needs more fuel. And that was causing the issue.. 22$ fix. Hope it helps yall..
