My a.c. hasn't been working since last summer. When I turn it on, the a.c.
makes a slight metallic rattle, very soft. The heat works fine. Does it need
refrigerant? Or is it something else?

Take it to a qualified A/C specialist. Do NOT try to service it yourself.
