Crash Test Drastically Changed When Car Did Not

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I was turned off from buying Suzuki SX4 due to poor ratings for the rear seat
(2 stars) in the 2012 model year and the 2013 model year. I had assumed
that older models would have similar or worse scores. But then I saw that the
car's 2010 ratings (and before) were actually good (4 stars.) How can this be
if there was no redesign (2013 marked the new generation, not 2012) and
there were no structural changes to the car? In fact, I think there were
additional safety features.

Is this:
1. a two star margin of error?
2. a change in measure or in the testing?
3. an actual change in the safety of the car?

I am assuming the last one and looking for models from 2010 and before.

I believe some of the crash tests are skewed. I saw a video of a late model Chevy Impala crash into a 1959 Chevy Impala. The 59 was hit on the front driver's side and the collision continued down the side of the car. Of course the narrator raved about how much safer the new Impala is because the side of the 59 model caved in causing substantial damage to the vehicle! What they don't tell you is that the X frame of the 59 was a poor design that GM changed in the mid 60s when they realized the X frame was very vulnerable in side impact collisions! If the two vehicles had met head on I bet the 59 model would have demolished the new Impala! The same might be true about the crash tests that you're seeing. I'd suggest doing further research on different crash tests scenarios before you make up your mind about which one to buy. Hope that helps!! Jim

Thanks, I did ask them directly and I am awaiting a response. I'd still love to hear informed opinions.

If you really are concerned about safety why buy a Suzuki? There are much safer cars out there.

Thanks for asking. I want a safe Suzuki SX-40 and the 2007-2011 have everything in the 4s and 5s. I'm just trying to figure out why it dropped in 2012. I am learning a bit by looking at the European (NCAP) and Australian ratings. But nothing seems to explain the big drop on the NHSTA rating despite consistent IIHS ratings.
