Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car shut off while driving..B4 shut off, sounded like
marbles rolling around inside engine.Towed.
Thought timing belt broke. Nope. Tensioner lost
bolt.. came off side of engine.(figured that's what
was making sound b4 it shut off.) ..installed new
tensioner. While timing cover was off,  went ahead
& replaced crank seal, oil pump seal & cam seal.
Also HAD to FIX crank pulley. Timing gear cog
stuck on. (Timing belt Gear (behind harmonic
balancer)Broke pulling off!) Replaced THAT also.
SO.. NOW.. found out harmonic balancer
(pulley/dampener)  woodruff key slot is worn out!
Had friend weld & machine out slot. Ok. Soo. Now
.. BITCH STILL won't start. I AM  A 53 year young
FEMALE back yard mechanic (heh) and NEED
ADVICE! PLEASE. My back hurts. Scratch that. MY
WHOLE BODY ACHES & I'M TIRED.  I've been little
by little for 6 months (weather permitting) trying to
get this car back to running. It's my ONLY vehicle! If
ANYONE can help. Much appreciation will follow!..
my ideas are starter or clutch?  I'm hoping the
inside of motor is NOT RUINED !! ALL my labor for
nothing!! Tears soon. Lol.

That sound you're describing, if it's been going on for a while before the car shut off, the engine's locked up. A way to find out for sure is by doing like a roll start but instead of 2nd gear, use 4th or 5th gear. If it locks the wheels up, the engine's locked up. If it turns the drive train and possibly the engine, your problem could be the starter or clutch safety switch.

Is the engine cranking? Is there fuel? Is there spark? More questions to follow after these answers.

NO engine dies not crank. NOTHING happens when i press the clutch & turn key to start. YES FUEL. LIGHTS come on when key turns to start but nothing happens. No sounds at all. It's as if battery is dead ...but lights come on. It's new battery. My thoughts: starter..clutch or at worse something on inside of engine. Hoping just starter. Digging it to it today. Starting with easier fix. BUT... would the car just STOP (DIE) While driving if its the starter? (I don't think so but I'm not a certified mechanic.) The starter is JUST to start car right? Hmm. ..Re: clutch...car might die while driving if clutch goes bad then NOT restart right?. Maybe coincidence that tensioner came off inside timing cover @ same time clutch went out?? Like I said ..timing belt did not break.. belt was still on cam gear . Tensioner came unbolted & was just flopping around inside timing cover along with the smashed tension spring .

If the engine is "locked up" would the crank turn while I was hand rotating the crank when setting the timing marks ? TY for help!

If the engine was locked up u would not have been able to turn it by hand. As for not cranking there is only 3 parts well 4 if u count the wires... the battery, the starter & the starter solenoid. Make sure the engine has a ground. Usually at some point down the line the negative battery cable grounds to the engine. And make sure the starter solenoid is plugged in.
