Why does the zip code need 3 or 6 digits?

why cant i use my 5 digit zip code on the main screen?  I do not know my 3
digit or 6 digit.

are you sure you are searching on the US site and not another country? The upper right of the screen click on your name, and down at the bottom, the flag should be US.
