Running a vehicle out of fuel damages the fuel pump, so it is very likely that it has happened to you. The fuel pump assembly and relay need replaced. Remember you should never run less than 1/4 tank of fuel, doing so exposes the fuel pump and the fuel pump uses the fuel as a coolant so if it is no longer covered by fuel it runs hotter than it normally would thus wearing it out way sooner.
