i live in south carolina, if i buy a car in another state , which state do you pay taxes in? one or both? how does that work?

In Illinois you pay taxes when you license and title the car at the DMV. We usually purchase automobiles in Indiana, and just pay the tax in Illinois. I believe that is true in all states pay where you register the auto.

Yes - you pay the sales tax rate for your home state.

I heard today if you live in SC and buy in Ohio, you have to pay Ohio your SC TAX by law, then they send you your $500 back in about a month with a title in your name. That's crazy but it's one of 7 states Ohio law requires you to pay to Ohio. I've even seen a document to that effect. And what's with the title. Are they sending me an official SC title after that 30 days? Who knows about this?
