IMV means instant market value. Value of the car based on current fair market price of the car.

Please be aware that the IMV is flawed for Private sellers. The "IMV" unfairly punishes a private seller. My vehicle was over $2000 difference to the downside from the same vehicle sold by a dealer. It is also misleading to a buyer who will miss out on the best deal if the IMV is highly weighted in their decision making. All in all it serves no one to post different values for the exact same commodity. This is a BIG FAIL IMHO. Cargurus i hope you are reading this. FIX IT

Above answer is accurate. KBB no longer differentiates between dealer and private, yet CarGurus slides this benefit under the table for dealers. It's deceptive and unfair to private sellers. This is especially true since it highlights "IMV" without any consideration or attempt to evaluate features or upgrades along the way. Recently blown and replaced motor? Who cares; it's worth the same! Hardtop included in your convertible listing? Who cares; it's worth the same! I understand it's not possible for an automated system to to evaluate these fundamentals, and that is my point. You should not build a business around a search algorithm that is so ignorantly flawed. I firmly believe this will ultimately result in exodus of sellers.

I found this exactly the case where my car is valued almost 10% lower than the same car yr with higher mileage from a dealer. :(

Does anyone have integrity selling vehicles anymore? Not that they ever did, not in my lifetime anyway! (I'm 63) Car dealers could operate just fine in an open market, but they choose to lie, misrepresent, cheat, and pay car gurus for their collusion. IMV = skewed information weighted heavily in the dealers favor. Never base your decision on this figure, in fact, it should be ignored completely!

IMV is simply a price comparison to other similar cars for sale. It is not a "book" value. Price it as high as you want but people are going to notice!

Actually dealers most commonly will perform not only a smog and safety inspection, detail the vehicle, and replace the warn wear items, versus private parties that may smog thier car, often explaining away damage, and wear items. On average dealers place $1k to $1,500 in reconditioning.
