BMW - Do you need factory computer for older cars?

Asked by Marie May 26, 2020 at 02:33 PM

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Right now I have a VW Jetta Hybrid.  Problem is that I need factory
computer to disable hybrid system in order to do minor maintenance work like
coolant exchange.  I want a car that I can work on myself, but I'm too much of
a car snob to drive a Camry or Corolla, and I do like the Euro cars.  Do you
need factory computer for older (pre-1999) BMW, Audi, VW?  Also, how hard is
it to find parts for VERY OLD BMW  like 1980s?

You don't NEED to have the diagnostic software for around 2002 and older, but anything newer it's a must. For example, I have a 1999 528i and the diagnostic software makes things much easier, and it's very easy to set up. However, I've had the car for years and just recently got the software and cable a few months ago. Just search for "BMW Standard Tools" and all the software is free, all you need is a $30 K+DCAN cable. As far as finding parts for older BMWs, I don't think it's too hard. Fortunately there's enough of an enthusiast following for these cars that parts are kept in stock by suppliers.
