we drove the car home, 2 min. away heavy smoke came from the steering colomn. after we put in park and shut off it is dead. when you put the key in, nothing, totally dead

Sounds like your ignition switch or the wiring to it has shorted out and melted. Take this to a dealer, I believe there was a recall or TSB on this exact problem with some GM and Saturn vehicles.
