cooling syst. elec. fans

what turns on elec. cooling fan s on 87 iroc 5.0L is it relay or sensor and  can i
change the turn on temp. so fans come on sooner then 220+

I agree that's a little too hot. I think either the fan sensor or the temperature gauge sensor is not right. (They may even be the same sensor.) It might even be the thermostat that makes it run on the hot side. None of those parts are expensive so I would replace them. Have it checked out.
