I was the unlucky recipient of my grandfathers 1991 Lexus LS400 in 1999 as my High School Graduation Present. It has 39K miles on it and would have intermittent start problems. Everytime I would take it to the Lexus dealer for repair, they would charge me $350-$500 saying this sensor, or this part was damaged. It is most likely the belt tensioner. That is what it ended up being with mine. It was only after 8 repair visits thats they tried this relatively inexpensive fix and it worked. I promptly sold it for a brand new Audi A6 Quattro (my 21st birthday present from my folks)

Mine kept showing the battery light also and I replaced the alternator and battery also and the actual problem was the pig tale connector to the alternator... it can cause the alternator to go out everytime and ur battery light to come on so I would check the connector!
