My 1968 corvette fuel gauge does not work (no surprise here). What are the troubleshooting steps I should take?

most of the time a fuel gauge problem is based off of a bad ground. but if it was me i would find a wire diagram for the fuel gauge and rewire the entire fuel gauge unit due to the year. could be bad wiring from over the years. also you could track down the wires that run to it and there is a way of touching the wires on a 9volt battery just to test the gauge to see if it works. just something ive learned by an old guy in florida
