What causes my 2001 lexus rx300 to sputter horribly and then engine light and vsc light come on?

When does it do it? And have you had the codes pulled to see what is tripping the light?

It did this morning about 10 degrees outside. Put some higheoctane gas in and fuel injector cleaner into this afternoon. Running a little better but light is staying on. Had codes ran before a few months ago when this happened. Replace one of the o2 sensors then, but it wasn't running bad then like it is now.

I would have the code(s) pulled. There are so many things that can cause the engine to run rough. The code(s) may point us in the correct direction. Most auto parts stores will pull the codes for free.
