Hello, I am inexperienced and purchased a 74 corvette. How do I determine what the original color of the car was? It is not on the title. Thank you for your help!

Asked by newbycarrestorer Jan 31, 2016 at 09:33 PM about the 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

Question type: General

I purchased a 1974 corvette on a whim and would like to get it painted back to the original color.  I am trying to restore everything I can to original or as close as possible.  I am unsure how to determine the paint color.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also if you have an idea of what a paint job would cost for the 1974 vette in Michigan.  Thank you.

Is your car at or very near original? If so, the first thing to look at is the brakes, engine and cooling system. Get it in top mechanical condition first. Try to replace as much as possible with original or near original equipment. Get a book that shows and maybe gives part numbers of all the times needing to be replaced. The very last thing to do is paint it. The stickers on the side of the door will give the factory paint colors. Any good car repair shop should have the color codes for factory paint, even for a 1974 Corvette. Go on line and put in 1974 Corvette stitistics and you will get the colors there. Good luck on the restoration. Take your time, do your research, and ask questions as you go. Don't get talked into getting what you don't need. As you go, you will find replacement parts are easy to find, but some may be a bit more expensive now that they are outdated. There are a handful of businesses that cater to the restorer that wants to keep original. A good Corvette magazine like "Vette" has a lot of advertisements for replacement parts, restoration articles, and what ever you want to know about your car. Good luck, have fun.

Look for the trim tag and the paint color as mentioned above. You can see what that number translates to for the color: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/c3/1974/74prod.html
