where can I get a low temp thermostat for a 85 Corvette. It gets hot after running for 45 minutes

Asked by jonkeyote Jul 24, 2016 at 06:06 PM about the 1985 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

85 corvette has C5 body panels.  It gets too hot after 45 minutes,  Changed the thermostat, burped the radiator, and checked that the fan was running (seems to run all the time).

It only has 1 fan (behind the radiator); don't know if a second one would help, or if it could be installed in front of the radiator.

I service C4's too.. A lower degree temperature thermostat will make your vehicle run hotter! Everyone knows about Vettes running hot and there are lots of cures for the cooling system. Before changing things make sure the stock system is "Ok" from the water pump to the cooling fins on the old vintage radiator 31 years old IF original. The cooling fan should NOT run all the time, when you key on It's running?

I agree with Auto_Centric, that Corvettes run hot. The more HP, the more heat in engines. If the fans run all the time, It may bee a sensor giving a high reading which will cause the fans to run constantly. Have you checked to see if the engine is indeed overheating or running hot even if your gauge indicates such? Check that out first and it may be a bad gauge, connection or wire or gauge. Is the air flow to the radiator unobstructed? Does the new front end allow as much air into the radiator as the stock car? You may need a larger or different air scoop. My redone 69 Vette runs so hot, (normally runs hot anyway) but with an additional 130+ HP I run my dual electrical fans constantly in So. Cal.
