I bought an 86 Vette with 4+3 manual transmission and while driving it home (190 miles) the center console got hotter and hotter. You woiuldn't put anything in the cup holder like hot. Any ideas?

Do you smell anything like electrical burning? Do jack up the car and see if the hear shield is in place. Also if your air/fuel mixture is wrong, it will cause the cat to over heat. Too much air and you'll fry the catalytic converter. This is a heavy smog car, and they continue to have issues with the smog junk and engine computers. Have it checked tomorrow or sooner so you don't set the beautiful car on fire.
No smell at all. I will take it in today and have both suggestions checked out. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Good luck and enjoy your Corvette.
Guess what? Somebody removed the heat shield! Imagine that...Thanks guys, you were most helpful. $175.00 fix and life is good!
Did you know that catalytic converters have been on the list most stolen from cars along with air bags on older vehicles? This is because replacement parts are very hard to come by and repair shops pay top price for them. IF you were thinking of getting an alarm system for your nice Corvette, I'd be looking into one, and one that has a motion sensor on it. They now come with an auto dial to your home or cell phone. When you have it replaced, ask them if it looks like someone was trying to remove it to take the cat or if it just "fell" off.
Can't believe it... for the $175.00 they not only replaced the heat shield but installed a new converter. I thought they were quoting me the shield only! Thanks again guys...and califcarson, THAT is one beautiful Vette you have! I am jealous. I bought this one for my wife and I have a 67 Camaro SS but after looking at your car I'm thinking about a second Vette in the garage instead! Love that color!
OK, my wife picked out the color. It is a GM 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix anniversary edition color. In 2002 it cost me $1,000 a gallon for the paint alone. I've had the Corvette since new when I returned from Viet Nam. It has over 300,250 miles on it. It was made to drive, so we did. Still working on it, only money.
